Penny, brown penny

'Tis the day that the phasing-out process begins for that lucky little brown penny that we've come to know and love.  Today the Royal Canadian Mint has officially ended its distribution of pennies.

"Penny"

As I think back....I am reminded of what that innocent little brown penny meant growing up (things that are also gone).  I think the fondest memory I have with my bro was going to the candy store across the road from church and buying one-cent candies on Sunday.  Filling a bag full of those delicious treats by using the pennies that I could squeeze out of my piggybank and handing them over to an amazing elderly man that took pride in his little shop set up in the sunporch of his tiny house.  Things definitely have increased in cost...and of course, I'll end it there before I start in with one of those "I remember when...." stories which even I used to sometimes roll my eyes at when I was younger.  RIP "Penny"

The penny is dropped and it's the end of life as we know it (Globe and Mail)

Don't get me wrong, in some ways I do get it, those pennies can really be a bit annoying and they multiply in number so quickly and can really weigh down a pocket!  Moving forward and "change" can sometimes be good thing, and other times not so much...but we get used to it.
Then there is my favourite poem....

BROWN PENNY

I whispered, 'I am too young,'
And then, 'I am old enough';
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
'Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair.'
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.

O love is the crooked thing,
There is nobody wise enough
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love
Till the stars had run away
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.
~William Butler Yeats

The old penny of the United Kingdom was a large brown coin, and had symbolic meaning to the common folk. One of those meanings was love, that love was something priceless, to which no mere material value could be attached. Although not understood today, that symbolism survives in the expression "a penny for your thoughts," which originally was used to indicate to the person spoken to that deep emotion motivated the question.

And song...

FIVE PENNIES

This little penny is to wish on
And make your wishes come true
This little penny is to dream on
Dream of all you can do
This little penny is a dancing penny
See how it glitters and it glows
Bright as a whistle
Light as a thistle
Quick, quick as a wink
Up on it's twinkling toes
This little penny is to laugh on
To see that tears never fall
This this little penny
Is the last little penny
And the most important of all
For this penny is to love on
And where love is, heaven is there
So with just five pennies, if they're these five pennies
You'll be a millionaire
For this penny is to love on
And where love is, heaven is there
So with just five pennies, if they're these five pennies
You'll be a millionaire

~Danny Kaye

On a side note....I'm looking for pennies...I have a crafty idea!
