For the love of dance
Starting to get those dreadful tax slips in the mail and as I look at them, I ponder...where did all that money go? And really...I don't have to think on it too long, I know that a large chunk of it has been utilized by the greatest passions I have. A bunch of things that I truly love: swimming, gym, adventures, and of course the largest chunk of all...DANCING!
For dancing, the sparks could have finally taken place by my love of old B&W movies with dancers gracing the screen with their smooth and sensual moves. It could be that guy in my grade seven class that could dance up a storm while I became a little weak in the knees. My mom for all her dance awesomeness. Perhaps it's from actually working at dancesport competitions in my 20s. Whenever it was...that turning point of when dancing became just a thing to watch and do at weddings and bars, to something I craved more than anything is fantastic. (I don't crave chocolate...but perhaps this is the same deep, dark craving).
Now, let me not mislead you, I do have fantasies of one day finally competing. But ultimately, this love for dance is just that...a love to dance. And, it took a few things for me to realize that not everyone is like that. The people that feel nervous dancing with me on a Saturday night in swing or westie, the guys who won't ask me to dance on a Friday evening at ballroom because they don't feel they are good enough. There is a point where I just have to let things go and those great opportunities to dance with so many people. I feel there is only so many times I can try to convince someone that I truly want to dance with them. There comes a time when I just let go and stop sharing my love of dancing with others and hope that they can discover it for themselves.
I walk down the grocery aisle with a couple shuffles of my feet, put the basket down in IKEA to do a couple rounds of westie with a friend, fit some aerials in while walking Relay for Life, dance some blues before saying goodbye to a friend. Dance has this great way of really expressing emotions, feelings and words that you just don't have at the moment.
And for the love of dance....I am happy that I spend way too much in a year on dance, dancing with all levels of dancers and ending up with a smaller pay cheque...all of this completely fills my heart and soul with happiness!
